New York, March 2008

I traveled to New York last weekend to see Nathan and Miller’s amazing show and see a bunch of people that I haven’t seen in ages. I can’t believe that I am old enought to have friends I have not seen in 4+ years, but it’s true. It was pretty much a 48 hour whirlwind, and I only took about 15 pictures the whole time because, once again, I got all caught up in living my life and did not stop enough to take pictures which is awesome and kind of sucks all at the same time.

We had such fun…even though we did not get to see everyone we wanted to (Misty & Sam-who had just come back from a trip and had a very sad loss to deal with upon their return) I know it will not be long before I come back. The fact is, I had a GREAT time in the city. It was beautiful and vibrant and happens to contain some of the best food I have had in a long time. It made me miss big city life, in a way I thought I never would.

I will see you soon New York…and next time I’m bringing my Mustached Man with me! Watch out!

It’s Buisness(sp) Time

The typo above (just the word, not the phrase) is written on a sign at the high school I am working at right now.

Scary! And awesome!

Well, it’s spring break here in Kansas City (woo hoo!) which means I am both trying to do my regular job and also teaching a week long camp. And also partying till the wee hours on St. Patrick’s day and having a beer with a Frank Sinatra imersonator, the shortest Elvis impersonator I have ever seen and a guy from Overland Park who just bought a limo. There are pictures, but regrettably I am not in possession of them. As soon as I get them, you will be the first to see them. And you will laugh and also be a bit confused.

I have some personal change cooking right now…more to come as the details become more solid. (No, it is not of the infant variety, so put that one to bed.) I am getting really excited though, and keep getting more pumped about it as the days go on. Less vague-ery to come…

Lastly, I leave you with this exciting news:

Spring…Boo!

I am the only human alive that does not love the spring forward/extra light thing. I don’t know why, I just prefer the cold dark nights myself. Maybe it’s because spring around here typically lasts about 3-5 days and then it’s 95-110 degrees every day for (what feels like) forever. Summer is pretty much completely devoid of value for me except for not having to wear socks, grilling and my birthday. The rest of it I could do without.

And why is it so great for it to get dark at 9 PM? I have bad flashbacks about going to bed when it was light out as a kid. It sucked! What can you do in daylight that you can’t do in the dark? Plus there was some study done about how it doesn’t actually save any energy. So why do we do it? Who knows.

Hell, I wish we could have gone back another hour…dark at 3 PM! Imagine! My dream come true!

Meanwhile, I am praying for at least one more snow…come on, freak snowstorm!

Who’s with me…?

God, there are so many more, but here are some of my favorites.

(All are spoken in seriousness…he does not think he says any of these incorrectly)

1. Ted Montana’s (He means Ted’s Montana Grill. Who is Ted Montana?!)
2. Weenie the Pooh (He means Winnie the Pooh. Weenie?! Gross!)
3. Teddy Rumpskin (He means Teddy Ruxpin. I cannot process the thought of Rump Skin)

Jeff Tweedy Article

This is a really cool article from the NY Times written by Jeff Tweedy (of Wilco) about his problems with migraines and panic disorder; and his subsequent rehab for painkillers. He makes some interesting points about being incapacitated by your problems (or not) and what various forms of addiction and mental illness bring to the creative process. It makes me think about how people have categorized him as being notoriously difficult to work with, and wonder how much his migraines had to do with that.

He also talks about how their album “A Ghost is Born” was greatly inspired by his migraines; thus explaining a lot of the noisy rise-and-fall feedback on the record.

An insightful look inside this very private guy’s world.

Goodbye Old Friend

Last week I had to say a very difficult goodbye to my old friend Big Jar of Vaseline.
oldjarfull.jpg

I honestly can’t remember when or where I bought Big Jar, but I am sure it was sometime while I lived in Chicago at my (very) old place on Agatite. I estimate that I have had it at least seven years, maybe longer. Seriously, I think I used this stuff ever single day for seven years. I used it on my lips, I used it on my feet, I used it under my eyes, I used it on my nose (in the winter and when I had a cold). It came on every trip I ever went on. It lived in four of my various apartments. Needless to say, i have taken a good amount of teasing for my devotion to Vaseline and its many wonders, but trust me, spend $3 and buy a jar…it will never let you down. People will mock you and then ask to use it, and then you can tell them to f&*% off.

Let’s take a minute to think about what it means to own a jar of Vaseline for Seven. Years.
oldjarfront.jpg
Notice the masking tape on the front of the jar? It used to say “Lance.” Why did I have a piece of masing tape that said “Lance” on my Vaseline jar? It’s a long (and NOT dirty) story.

oldjarback.jpg
Look at how awesomely weathered the back of the jar is…from years of tireless service.

oldjarinner.jpg
I’m not sure if this picture does it justice, but let me tell you this jar is EMP to the TY. I even used it sparingly the last few weeks because I was actually a little bummed about throwing it away. Yes, sometimes I feel sorry for inanimate objects.

So what to do when you run out of your best friend? You buy a new jar. A baby travel jar. Behold! Little Jar of Vaseline!

Farewell, Big Jar. You will be missed. However, I do have higher hopes of your little counterpart’s lid staying closed in my suitcase. You always kind of sucked at that.
